Review For Wintergirls By Laurie Halse Anderson

Book: Wintergirls By Laurie Halse Anderson
Published by Viking Juvenile 2009
Pages 282

Themes/Subjects: Family, Letting Go, Love, Food, Being Skinny

First Line:"So she tells me, the words dribbling out with the cranberry muffin crumbs, commas dunked in her coffee"

This book centers on a teenage girl named Lia, who is dealing with the loss of her ex-best-friend, Cassie, who died from damage in her stomach, livers, etc. which was caused by puking herself right after eating a heavy meal. She called Lia 33 times, leaving voice mails on every call. But Lia was too mad at her to pick up. "She died in a motel room alone" is what starts haunting Lia everyday until finally Cassie starts haunting her herself and she tells Lia, "Your not dead, but your not alive, your a wintergirl."
This book revolves around Lia slipping back into her old eating habits : eating basically nothing at all. While her family keeps trying to eat more she finally goes too far and and cut open her torso. But this did not do any good because her stepsister, Emma found her in the bathroom cutting herself. The rest of the book is about Lia learning how to defeat Cassie and eating healthy.
This book was phenomenal. Even though there was some gross parts, hence the cutting her torso open, it was still intriguing and put you in awe at how this actually happens in some peoples lives. I recommend this to anyone because they need to see the truth about these sorts of people.
5/5 Stars
